When
side effects occur with most tooth whitening procedures, sensitivity
is what most people complain about. It doesn't happen all the time
but it does happen. So what can you do when your teeth become sensitive?
There are several options available that can help in cases of sensitivity
caused by a tooth whitening system. Some measures can even be taken
before undergoing a whitening procedure to minimize the chances of
sensitivity.
If your teeth becomes sensitive during a whitening procedure, the
first thing to do could be to reduce the treatment length. For example,
people using professional home whitening kits could cut the time they
wear the mouth tray. So if you wear the mouth tray for an hour each
session, just wear them for 30 minutes instead.
If the teeth are still sensitive, it may be necessary to stop the
treatment all together for a few days in order for your teeth to get
used to the whitening process.
Another option available is a special gel that contains high amounts
of fluoride. What the fluoride does is remineralizes the tooth and
helps to strengthen it. It would be a good idea to apply the fluoride
to your teeth several minutes prior to and after every whitening session.
A great product to use during the whitening process is a special toothpaste
specifically designed for sensitive teeth. A good example would be
Sensodyne. These special toothpaste's contain potassium nitrate and
it is useful in relaxing the nerve endings. Using a toothpaste specifically
for sensitive teeth before, during, and after you begin a whitening
procedure is a great way to reduce the chances of getting sensitive
teeth. This is not a guarantee that it won't happen but at least you
can reduce the likelihood of having to experience it.
