| Is Teeth Whitening
Right For Me? |
 |
Is teeth
whitening right for me? This is a good question. There isn't really
one answer that fits everyone. People get their teeth whitened for
all sorts of reasons. There are even reasons for people not to get
their teeth whitened.
Even though there isn't a clear answer, there are some circumstances
that may keep you from undergoing a teeth whitening treatment.
Existing tooth sensitivity and/or allergies
If you are currently experiencing sensitivity whether from a previous
teeth whitening procedure or other reason, you may want to serious
reconsider teeth whitening. A possible side effect to tooth whitening
is an increase in sensitivity so people with already sensitive teeth
should reconsider. Also, it goes without saying that if you have any
allergies to peroxide should avoid teeth whitening using bleaching
agents.
Age and pregnancy concerns
Teeth whitening should not be performed by children under 16. The
nerve root is still developing and any whitening procedure could make
it become more sensitive. Also, women who are pregnant or lactating
should avoid teeth whitening to avoid complications in the developing
child.
Severely or dark stains
Certain types of stains do not respond well to teeth whitening procedures.
Stains that are brown or grayish fall into this category. These type
of stains may best be suited for other dental option such as veneers
or crowns. Teeth whitening or bleaching is most effective on yellowish
stains.
Fillings, crowns and other procedures
Dental restorations such as fillings, crowns, and veneers do not whiten.
Also, dental restorations will not whiten so any whitening should
be done prior to any dental restoration. Otherwise, the teeth will
end up with uneven whitening.
Gum disease, cavities, and other oral health concerns
Anyone who has gum disease is generally discouraged from undergoing
any teeth whitening procedure. For people with cavities, they need
to be filled in prior to teeth whitening to avoid possible penetration
of the bleaching agent in the inner parts of the tooth where decaying
exists.
Unrealistic expectations
Often people want to get the whiter than white look may find that
it is not always realistic. Smokers especially need to be aware that
smoking during the teeth whitening process will counter some of the
effects. Smoking should be refrained from at least until the procedure
is completed.
